Comiket returns! Japan’s largest otaku convention announced for 2021 with new admission policies

Restart follows cancellation of 2020 iterations due to coronavirus pandemic.

A lot of 2020 events have been called off because of the coronavirus, but the one that stung the most for otaku in Japan was the cancellation of Comiket 98. The gathering of dojinshi independent manga creators, cosplayers, and various pop subculture enthusiasts was supposed to take place in May, but the pandemic put a stop to that, and also resulted in the soft cancelation/non-announcement of a winter Comiket for 2020, which would have happened in late December in a normal year.

On Tuesday, though, Comiket’s organizers officially announced that Comiket will be returning in 2021, to be held from May 2-5 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center. However, just because Comiket will be returning to its traditional home doesn’t mean that it’ll be business as usual.

For starters, the organizers say there’s no way the upcoming Comiket will be able to be as big as the event usually is. 2019’s summer and winter Comikets each drew between 200,000 and 300,000 people daily, but Comiket 99 will only be able to admit a fraction of those crowds. The organizers say the cap will likely be “a few man people each day,” man being a Japanese numerical unit equal to 10,000. Because of that, not only exhibitors, but cosplayers and regular guests wanting to attend will likely have to submit to a lottery system in order to secure a pass. Attendance application will open on November 25 and run through December 8.

As a health precaution, exhibitors and guests will be required to wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose, with those failing to comply being denied entrance to the venue. The organizers are also asking that attendants install the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s COVID-19 Contact-Confirming Application (COCOA) …continue reading

Tonikaku Kawaii Episode 7 Impression

On this episode, Nasa and Tsukasa takes a bus trip to Nara. Meanwhile, Chitose stalks them and attempts to sabotage their relationship.

Okay, I’m now fully convinced that Chitose is the “annoying main antagonist” throughout this entire series. But, I’m a bit disappointed that there’s no actual dark plots so far just like the author’s other Hayate no Gotoku series (aside the beginning truck accident). Although, I’m quite enjoying Nasa’s and Tsukasa’s romantic interactions. Anyway, the bus the trip is great. Also, it was interesting to see our male lead and Chitose interacting more. Now what’s going to happen next? I’ll be definitely looking forward to it. Overall, nice romantic bus trip and touring. …continue reading

Hanyou no Yashahime: Sengoku Otogizoushi Episode 7 Impression

On this episode, the left behind Towa searches for Setsuna and encounters a stranger. Later, Towa gets captured and rescued by her companions.

So this is basically the “recap” plot of episode 1’s glimpse, but with additional scenes connecting the dots which is nice. Although, honestly, I was hoping Towa to be fully ditched because I still find her naivety to be very annoying. Other than that, the introduction of some new antagonists and a mysterious pirate guy is interesting. Now what’s going to be the next plot? I’ll be looking forward to it. Overall, nice recap of episode 1 with scenes connecting the dots. …continue reading

On this episode, Bell continues fighting Dix and attempts to stop the rampaging Wiene. Later, Bell makes a crucial decision if he should publicly protect the Xenos.

Man, I was really waiting to see Bell finally defeat Dix and stop Wiene early from rampaging. But, the action surprisingly became more dark and huge disadvantages come after another for our male lead. Also, I find the near ending to be a bit of a shock. Other than that, I hope the Hestia Familia will step in for Bell. Now what’s going to happen next? I can’t wait to see how our male lead is going resolve his situation. Overall, more interesting dark twists and some nice bonding moments. …continue reading

Behind the Blog – 20 Years in the Making

NieR: Automata soundtrack cover art

5 years ago, I wrote “Behind the Blog – 15 Years in the Making.” It was a post detailing how I was diagnosed with clinical depression in 2000 and the experiences that led to me starting this blog.

Now it’s 5 years later and I want to look back at that post a bit. I’m also going to discuss further insights about my past that I remembered and recent thoughts learned over time.

In my recent post about Komi Can’t Communicate, I mentioned my parents being worried about me having a possible communication disorder at the age of 2 and their decision to put me through special education classes. I joke that my life was doomed from the start even though it turned out I was alright. My father recently told me that when I was in pre-kindergaren, he was stalked by two men who wanted to rob him. After going on a school trip, I was dropped off by the special education class at a certain spot and my father went to pick me up. Once he did, he realized he was being followed while taking me home. Thankfully, he went inside a store with a security guard at the front door and nothing happened.

I’m really glad that nothing bad happened in front of my eyes. I don’t know how I would have processed it all. My parents have told me stories of how bad New York City was back in the 1970s’-1980s’. They have been robbed several times when they first moved to America. Before I was born, my mother was pregnant and was chased by three men who wanted to rape her. She got away, but fell down to the ground while escaping. My mother had a miscarriage as a …continue reading

City in Japan receives donation for kids with letter signed by two ultra-popular anime characters

Cash in the mail to pay for kids’ Christmas gifts supposedly comes from Demon Slayer and PreCure stars. While Japanese entertainment fiction isn’t completely devoid of internally conflicted protagonists and messy, murky themes, many of the most popular anime series are centered on good people consistently doing good things. For example, Tanjiro Kamado follows the path […]

Komi and the Difficulty of Communication

Shoko Komi, Komi Can't Communicate

I finally got into Komi Can’t Communicate and read the 1st 8 volumes after years of hearing about it in internet manga circles. It has quite a charm that makes it stand out over most school slice-of-life series. I also thought about what it meant to have a communication disorder like the main character, Shoko Komi, because I went through an experience where my parents thought I had a communication disorder.

When I was 2 years old, I could only talk using single words. My parents wondered what was wrong with me. They went looking for doctors and speech language therapists for help. My pediatrician at the time told my mom that there was nothing wrong with me biologically. A speech therapist told my mom about a special education school that would help improve my communication skills. So I attended that school for pre-kindergarten. Afterwards, I attended individual speech learning sessions at elementary school as my parents wanted to make sure that I could talk with no problem.

Seeing Komi’s struggles from childhood make me think about how her parents couldn’t help her. Komi’s father has a communication disorder as well which complicated things a bit, but nothing horrible happens as both are able to express themselves to each other. In any case, Komi’s friendship with the main male lead Hitohito Tadano is adorable. I like how Tadano tries to encourage Komi to slowly break out of her shell. I used to be really shy when it came to talking to fellow peers when I was a kid even though my speech issues were mostly gone. It took me a while to overcome my shyness. I think I owed my friends at the time for that a la Komi. You truly grow being around people …continue reading

On this episode, Nasa thinks of buying a bigger home and confronts Tsukasa about his idea. Later, they plan to visit Tsukasa’s parents for a guarantor request.

Wow, seeing Nasa think up of buying a bigger home is hilarious and quite adorable. Also, I really liked how Tsukasa is fine with their small apartment until Nasa convinced her otherwise. Other than that, seeing Nasa’s mom’s phone reactions is interesting. Now what’s going to happen next? I’ll be really looking forward to it. Overall, adorable bigger home development and some interesting details about Nasa’s parents. …continue reading
